Athletes and
pilots at work
In July 2023, Telkwa, a serene town in Northern British Columbia, played host to its annual triathlon against a unique and challenging backdrop. As wildfires raged in the surrounding areas, athletes found themselves sharing the stage with an unexpected cast – aerial firefighters and their water-bombing planes.
While participants engaged in the familiar grueling swim, bike, and run, the routine of the event took an unusual turn. Bombers, vital in the ongoing battle against the encroaching wildfires, were seen loading up on water directly from the lake where the triathlon was unfolding. The scene unfolded with a quiet juxtaposition of athletes immersed in competition while pilots diligently prepared to tackle the raging inferno.
Telkwa's triathlon became more than a test of physical endurance; it became a symbol of the town's resilience in the face of environmental challenges. In this unexpected collision of sport and emergency response, the community showcased its ability to adapt and persevere, even when the world around them was ablaze.
